In light of our troubled economy, I can't help but daydream about the possibility of more primitive living in the future - the good and the bad. So here's a question: if we lost power, paychecks, and all the rest, what would you need in order to survive? Think on this one - food, tools (non-electric!), guns & ammo, needles and thread, fabric, cookware, a root cellar, scrap wood and other building materials?? Let's make a list of the things an outpost woman would need in order to survive outside society...

Well one of the main things I can think of would be a good supply of water. And not only things to have and keep but things one need to know. the best is learning to ration. If you have only so much water for a certain period of time then you have to ration it out. You can't just run to the store. Maybe a good thing would be to practice this right now. When my children were little we went shopping once a week and that was it. If we ran out of something--well too bad--next time you won't. It is a good discipline. MB

TONS of stuff, but these are good ones. Luxury-wise, I think I'd like to have a good store of carefully rationed coffee...I have a lovely plunge pot to brew it in!

Good list, add water and storage for your water so it won't freeze. If the grid goes down that would be something needed. Along with ways to keep warm. Building some type of efficent fireplace. I think also things that one could bater. Maybe adding extra food stuff to the pantry like sugar. Food will be more important then money.

Oh and probably a safe place dug out and hidden where others who have not gathered and want to take, can not find your food, guns and such.

Having some sort of movable tent just in case you have to move out fast. BOB (bug out bags) ready for each member.

Having books that ID wild plants to eat.

Oh theres so much one can do for the what ifs.

That sounds like a good list to me Jen! Let's add in some sort of domesticated animals like chickens, goats?, cattle and for me- Horses!
