Our cabin currently has NO electricity - we have a generator for power tools etc. but we have purchased a windmill and started buying solar panels as we plan to have a combination wind/solar system in place by the time we move in. Would love to hear from others how their systems have worked out!

Sherri, Here is a very interesting blog about a guy/family who have lived off the grid in S.E. Mn for 31 years. They also don't have a refrigerator! The Jan. 26 post shows some of the difficulties of being solar in a Northern climate. JoAnn

I get really antsy this time of year - my computer wallpaper is a picture of my first garden I planted over there a couple of years ago when I spent the whole summer in solitude. It was just me, my little dog, and my garden for four months. I only went to town a couple of times that whole summer and it was so good for the soul!

I stay over there a few months at a time now, but we can't move over as a couple until dh retires - 41 months. We do spend as much time as we can there - always when he's laid off work from his construction job.

When are you thinking of moving to the cabin, Sherri?
