For the past several days I have picked 3 - 7 Shaggy mane mushrooms from along our driveway. You have to pick them quickly since they are in a genus commonly called inky caps. They turn black and inky as they mature so the secret is to cook them up right away. I bring them back to the kithen saute in a little butter then freeze if I'm not going to use them right away. Of course I have to take a nibble or too before I do that : ) JoAnn

I had to look these up, JoAnn, and sure enough, I've seen them around here. I always thought they must be poisonous - all that black gooeyness. Hey, not all of us are married to mycologists, right? Anyway, here's the site I found:
http://www.wildmanstevebrill.com/Mushrooms.Folder/Shaggy%20Mane.html

And here's an interesting quote from the site...
"Don’t drink alcohol within hours of eating this mushroom or its similar relative, the alcohol inky cap (Coprinus atramentarius). The combination may sometimes cause temporary but frightening symptoms that vanish after a few hours."
Hmmm.....

When we take people out we usually mention drinking alcohol and eating them. We've never had a problem but we don't drink tons of alcohol with tons of shaggy manes. They are considered one of the foolproof four of mushrooms. Today I did a little mushrooming by car. We live on the paved part of our road but the far side is "primitive" I remembered find some along the primitive part a couple of years ago so on the way home from town I came back the primitive road and by golly I spotted 12 shaggy manes growing out of the ditch on the side of the road. They were big meaty ones not yet turning black. Cooking them up as I type this. JoAnn

That is awesome. I am too chicken to go mushrooming. I really would want a trained mycologist to take me out the first couple of times if I ever decide to go :D

I solved that problem by marrying a trained mycologist : ) I sometimes still question him though. When he brought me some black chantrelles which the other common name is "trumpet of death" I made him show me proof it was edible--it was. JoAnn

You are one lucky girl! I would love to be confident enough to go mushroom collecting!
